The CD consists of nine religious pieces and one profane piece written for piano by Franz Liszt, between 1838 and 1870. These works are a reflection, par excellence, of an artistic approach to the composer’s profound faith.

Through spiritual music, Liszt marks his time (Benedictus de la Messe du couronnement hongrois), as well as our time (Cantique d’amour, Un Sospiro). Witness the pianistically importance to the Virgin Mary (5 chants à la Vierge), and this pilgrim before the Eternal as he strides the centuries (La Marche du Chevalier à la Croix, Saint-François-de-Paule marchant sur les flots), and we are transported to the rich domain of faith.

These seductive and warm interpretations transport us with warm immediacy to the center of Liszt's musical professions as a "man of faith." Anne-Marie Dubois has chosen wisely from his disconcertingly uneven production in this line to offer a compelling hour of the most spellbinding poetry suffused with a constant play of sonority and color, freshness and lyricism, radiance and rapture. A marvelous album from an artist who knows how to spirit up marvels, fluently, effortlessly, enchantingly.

These eight jewels of Liszt are joined here to illustrate the life of Francis of Assisi, who was a particular subject of fascination and emulation for this great composer (written between 1837 and 1880).

Povorello, a great saint who shined universally, is relived across an elegant choice of pieces. A dishevelled life, and thoughts of Assisi, who was the king of feasts when in his youth, and of golden days of youth (La Danza). Discovering the beauty of Lady Poverty (Spozalisio), he rebuilds the little chapel that had been left in ruins (La Chapelle de Guillaume Tell / The chapel of William Tell). In communion with nature ( La Prédiction aux oiseaux, Cantico di San Francesco), he also has us relive the Nativity (Les bergers à la mangeoire), and ultimately brings us to the heights of love (Vexilla Regis Prodeunt).
